A song for Elkin

Wake up today, there’s work to do.

The heat it clings, but that is nothing new.

It’s all the same just make it through another day.

We’ve just met.  You don’t know if you

can trust me yet.  And all I know is I will

never forget how beautiful you are

when you’re smiling.

And you don’t know anything but what’s beside you.

And you can’t see the way that light shines from within you.

And you just pray that he won’t put his arms around you

Tonight.   Tonight.

Shouldn’t a life be easier at ten years old.

I wish that I could save you but I am not so bold

to think I know what’s best, if truth be told

I just don’t know the answer.

The colour of your hair reveals that you aren’t eating.

You make me so aware of how this life is fleeting.

I pray to God.  I pray, I keep repeating

Should I stay?  Show me the way.

And you don’t know anything but what’s beside you.

And you can’t see the way that light shines from within you.

And you just pray that he won’t put his arms around you

Tonight.  Tonight.
